Kowkoor Kidnapping-Murder Case: Former Guard Arrested

Police investigation in the Kowkoor kidnapping murder case in Hyderabad

Hyderabad police have arrested a former security guard in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of a five-year-old girl from a gated residential community in Kowkoor, after investigators used CCTV footage and technical surveillance to trace the suspect.

The accused, identified as Vikram Kumar, a native of Nalanda district in Bihar, allegedly kidnapped Aurelia, also known as Monu, from Villa Orchids on October 10. Police said the child’s body was later found in an unused water sump in the cellar of the community’s clubhouse.

Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B Sumathi said the girl, a PP-2 student, usually played with her bicycle in the clubhouse games zone at around 6 pm and returned home by 7 pm. On October 10, she did not return home, following which her family received a call from an unidentified person claiming to have the child in his custody.

The caller allegedly said he was in Secunderabad and demanded Rs 20 lakh from the family. Police subsequently formed 10 special teams comprising personnel from the Malkajgiri zone, Special Operations Team, crime wing and special branch. The investigation involved technical surveillance, call detail analysis and examination of CCTV footage from the residential complex and surrounding areas.

According to Sumathi, investigators suspected Kumar after reviewing the CCTV footage. He had worked as a security guard at the residential community from September 22 to October 6, several days before the child went missing. Police eventually traced and apprehended him.

The police commissioner said Kumar allegedly confessed during interrogation to killing the child as part of a premeditated plan to extort Rs 20 lakh from her parents. Police alleged that the suspect decided to kill the girl after realising that he could not control her while carrying out the kidnapping plan. He allegedly concealed the body in the unused sump to avoid detection.

The case has drawn attention to security arrangements inside gated residential communities, where access control, staff verification, surveillance coverage and the management of common areas can directly affect resident safety. The police account indicates that CCTV footage from the complex became a key part of the investigation.

Kumar was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. Police said they would pursue the case and seek an early trial before a fast-track court, with the aim of securing the death penalty.
