A car allegedly driven at high speed after alcohol consumption hit three to four two-wheelers near MIT College on Paud Road in Pune’s Kothrud at around 8 pm on Thursday, leaving three to four riders with minor injuries, according to a report by Sakal. Kothrud police detained the 24-year-old student driving the car and sent him for a medical examination.
The car was travelling towards Kothrud depot from the MIT College side when it collided with the two-wheelers, the report said. The incident caused confusion in the area as people gathered at the spot after the crashes.
According to the report, local residents stopped the car after the collisions, pulled the driver out and handed him over to the police. Sakal reported that some residents assaulted the driver before police took control of the situation.
Senior Inspector Arun Ghodke of Kothrud police said the young man is a student at MIT College and lives in the Sinhagad Road area. He reportedly said the initial indication was that the driver had consumed alcohol before driving. The driver’s medical examination was being conducted, and the police had not received a formal complaint at the time of the report.
The medical examination is expected to establish whether alcohol was present and, if so, the level detected. Police have not yet announced the final charges or confirmed the extent of injuries suffered by the two-wheeler riders. The report described the injuries as minor and said that further legal action was underway.
The location is part of a busy movement corridor connecting Paud Road, MIT College and Kothrud depot. The incident has again brought attention to the risks faced by pedestrians and two-wheeler users in an area already affected by traffic congestion and a reported lack of footpaths.
The episode also highlights the limits of road safety enforcement when dangerous driving is addressed only after a collision. In this case, immediate intervention came from local residents, while the formal determination of the driver’s condition and the next legal steps remain with the police.
Kothrud police are continuing the investigation after the medical examination. The next official steps will depend on the examination findings, the injured riders’ statements and whether a formal complaint is filed.
