Kolkata Voter Registration Camps to Target First-Time and Marginalised Citizens

Kolkata voter registration camps being organised for residents at a civic outreach venue

Kolkata North will hold special voter registration camps to bring eligible residents, including first-time voters and people living in night shelters and labour colonies, into the electoral roll. The initiative was announced by the Kolkata North district election office and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner’s office in a press release issued on Monday.

The campaign follows a 1 October 2026 directive from the Election Commission of India. Officials said any person who meets the prescribed eligibility conditions can apply for inclusion in the electoral roll at any time. The stated objective is to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the list.

The special camps will be organised across different areas of Kolkata North. Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers will conduct the camps with support from Booth Level Officers and other election officials. The announcement did not specify the dates or locations of individual camps.

The campaign will give particular attention to eligible residents who may face greater difficulty accessing routine enrolment processes. This includes people living in night shelters, residents of labour colonies and citizens from marginalised sections of society. The election authorities said the focus was to create opportunities for all eligible citizens to apply for inclusion.

The drive will also include voter-awareness activities. According to the press release, information about the registration process will be shared through educational institutions, local-level outreach, voter awareness programmes under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation initiative, and regular engagement with the media.

The announcement places the district election machinery and the municipal administration at the centre of a civic enrolment exercise that depends on both administrative access and public awareness. Booth-level officials are expected to assist the registration process, while outreach activities will seek to inform residents about their opportunity to apply.

The campaign is especially relevant for young people preparing to vote for the first time and for residents whose living conditions may make contact with formal administrative systems more difficult. The authorities have not released a target number of new registrations or a schedule for completing the special camps.

The Kolkata North district election office and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner’s office said the initiative would focus on providing every eligible citizen an opportunity to be included in the voter list. Further details on camp dates and venues are expected to be communicated through the election department’s outreach and awareness channels.
