Kolkata Traffic Violations Trigger 334 Cases on Panchami Night

Kolkata traffic police monitoring vehicles during Durga Puja night traffic

Kolkata Police registered 334 cases for traffic violations across the city on the night of Panchami, as intensified enforcement began ahead of the Durga Puja rush. Police said 28 people were arrested in connection with traffic violations and several related incidents, while 3.6 litres of liquor were seized.

The enforcement figures were included in a list released by Kolkata Police covering violations recorded across the city during the night. The action was part of heightened surveillance during the festival period, when large crowds, increased vehicle movement and late-night travel place additional pressure on Kolkata’s roads.

According to the police figures, 35 cases were filed against people travelling three to a motorcycle. Another 92 cases involved riders who were allegedly driving without helmets. Police also recorded 65 cases for allegedly rash driving and 61 cases against people accused of driving in an intoxicated condition.

The remaining 81 cases were filed for other alleged violations of traffic rules. Together, the five categories accounted for all 334 traffic-related cases recorded on Panchami night. The police list did not provide a further breakdown of the 81 cases in the report.

The enforcement drive comes as Kolkata increases security and monitoring around Durga Puja celebrations. Police have been conducting special surveillance to prevent traffic violations and avoid incidents that could disrupt the festival period. Motorists and visitors entering the city have also been advised to follow traffic rules and drive carefully.

The figures highlight the range of risks faced by a city managing festival traffic after dark, from helmet violations and triple riding to alleged speeding or reckless driving and suspected drunk driving. During Durga Puja, roads around major public gathering areas experience sustained movement of pedestrians, private vehicles, two-wheelers and visitors from outside Kolkata.

Kolkata Police said the arrests were linked to traffic rule violations and several other incidents recorded during the operation. The seizure of liquor was also reported as part of the enforcement action. The police’s published list is the current official account of the cases and arrests recorded during Panchami night.
