Kolkata Stampede Shuts Major Durga Puja Pandals as Toll Remains Unclear

Kolkata stampede aftermath outside a crowded Durga Puja pandal

A Kolkata stampede at the Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal on Saturday led police to close several major pandals to visitors, while authorities began investigating an incident that the supplied report says killed at least 18 people and injured several others. The death toll remains subject to verification because the same report also refers to 17 people being feared dead.

The injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, according to the report. Senior Kolkata Police officials reached the Chorebagan pandal after the incident, and visitors were stopped from entering the venue. The police response subsequently extended to other high-footfall locations, including Suruchi Sangha, Chetla Agrani and several other prominent Durga Puja pandals.

The report attributes the preliminary account of the incident to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who visited the hospital. Citing an initial input from the assistant commissioner of police present at the site, Adhikari said the stampede was triggered after an announcement by a private security agency and the blowing of whistles. He said he would not give a definitive statement before the investigation was completed and promised a transparent inquiry.

The puja committee members and the security agency involved were detained, according to the report. It does not establish whether formal arrests had been made or specify the sections under which any case was registered. Those details, along with the verified number of deaths and injuries, remain important to understanding the sequence of events and the accountability framework that will follow.

The West Bengal government also launched a toll-free helpline, 18003455678, for information related to the incident, the Information and Culture department said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the stampede as extremely distressing and said the local administration was providing assistance. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had spoken with Adhikari, expressed condolences to the families of those who died and postponed his scheduled programmes in West Bengal to visit the injured. Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed condolences, while CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty called for the administration and state government to take responsibility.

The Chorebagan pandal had attracted particular attention this year for its theme, “Arob”, described in the report as meaning “Beyond Sound”. The report does not provide the approved visitor capacity, crowd count, entry and exit arrangements, emergency access plan or the number of private security personnel deployed at the site. These operational details will be central to determining whether the incident arose from a sudden crowd surge, a communication failure, inadequate movement controls or a combination of factors.

The closures highlight the recurring challenge of managing festival crowds at temporary urban venues. The report recalls earlier stampede-like situations at Durga Puja pandals in Deshapriya Park, Sreebhumi and Kalyani, and says Tala Prattoy would remain closed to visitors until further notice. At the time of publication, authorities had not announced a complete reopening schedule for the affected pandals or released a final investigation finding. The death toll, injury count and next official steps require confirmation from the police, hospitals and the state administration.
