Kolkata Police registered 726 cases and arrested 67 people for alleged traffic violations across the city on Ashtami night during Durga Puja 2026, including helmetless riding, triple-riding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to a list released by Lalbazar, 231 cases were filed against motorcyclists accused of riding without helmets. Police also registered 155 cases for carrying more than two people on a single motorcycle.
Another 90 cases were filed for traffic rule violations, while 81 people faced cases for allegedly driving vehicles in an intoxicated condition. The police list recorded a further 169 cases under other traffic-related violations, taking the total to 726.
The enforcement action came amid heightened traffic management during the festival, when large crowds travel across Kolkata at night to visit puja pandals. Police patrols and monitoring are conducted across the city during the festival period, particularly on nights when road use increases and traffic movement becomes more difficult.
The figures show that helmet violations formed the largest identified category, accounting for 231 of the 726 cases. Cases involving more than two riders on a motorcycle were the second-largest listed category, followed by other traffic violations and alleged drunk driving.
