A crowd crush at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin puja pandal in north Kolkata killed 17 people and injured 15 others on Saturday evening, prompting the temporary closure of several prominent Durga Puja venues across the city. The incident occurred shortly after 7.30 pm when part of a gate reportedly collapsed under pressure from the crowd, creating a stampede-like situation.
The injured were taken to Kolkata Medical College, where 15 people were reported to be receiving treatment. The deceased reportedly included a five-year-old child. Police and disaster-response personnel reached the pandal after receiving information about the incident and began rescue operations.
The incident took place during heavy rain in Kolkata and adjoining areas. Visitors had continued pandal-hopping despite the weather, with large numbers arriving at venues during the evening. According to the report, an announcement made over the public-address system at the puja venue was followed by sudden movement and panic among visitors. A police officer at the site reportedly told authorities that the announcement led to people rushing, resulting in the crowd crush.
The official quoted in the report said the Chorbagan puja had been stopped and that the premises had been handed over to forensic and fire-service teams. The official also said that members of the puja committee, private security personnel and people on duty had been detained for questioning. A fact-finding inquiry was announced, with the authorities cautioning against reaching conclusions before the investigation is completed.
The event has led to temporary restrictions at several well-known puja venues in Kolkata, including Chetla Agrani, Alipore Sarbojanin, Allen Park, Tridhara Sammilani and Tala Pratoy. The closures are intended to address visitor safety while authorities assess the situation and crowd-management arrangements.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of those who died and said the local administration was providing assistance to the affected. The Prime Minister’s Office said that financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund would be provided to each bereaved family. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed grief and announced the cancellation of his scheduled programmes in West Bengal on Sunday, according to the report.
The disaster has placed renewed attention on the management of large festival crowds in dense urban neighbourhoods, where temporary gates, narrow access routes, private security arrangements and sudden weather-related surges can affect movement. The immediate official response remains focused on medical treatment, identification of the deceased, forensic examination of the venue and the investigation into the sequence of events. Further action is expected after the fact-finding and safety assessments are completed.
