The Kolkata pandal stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja venue in north Kolkata killed 19 people and injured at least 25 others on Saturday evening, as investigators examine whether announcements, repeated whistles, heavy rainfall and congestion contributed to a sudden crowd surge.
The incident took place at the popular pandal on Muktarambabu Street, where large numbers of visitors had gathered for Durga Puja. The circumstances surrounding the movement of people through the venue, including the management of entry and exit routes, are now under investigation.
West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party president Samik Bhattacharya said in a post on X that preliminary information attributed to an Assistant Commissioner of Police present at the scene suggested that an announcement followed by repeated whistles from a private security agency may have contributed to the situation. Bhattacharya cautioned that investigators should establish the sequence of events before any conclusions are drawn.
The report said members of the puja organising committee and employees of the private security agency had been detained as authorities examined the arrangements at the venue. Investigators are expected to assess whether instructions issued to visitors, public announcements or the actions of security personnel contributed to panic or a sudden change in crowd movement.
Heavy rainfall and congestion near the pandal have also emerged as factors being examined. Witness accounts cited in subsequent reports raised concerns about crowding, confusion around movement through the venue and the availability of clearly managed entry and exit routes. Police are investigating whether the weather conditions and the movement of visitors during the rush combined to create the circumstances that led to the fatal crowd crush.
The tragedy has placed renewed attention on the safety arrangements required at temporary festival venues that attract large crowds in dense urban areas. The investigation will determine how the venue was organised, how security personnel communicated with visitors and whether crowd movement was being monitored as conditions changed.
The West Bengal government has announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh and a government job for the family of each person killed in the incident, according to the report. A fact-finding investigation has also been announced to examine the circumstances that led to the deaths and injuries.
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda expressed condolences to the bereaved families and said local authorities were conducting rescue and relief operations. Former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also expressed grief over the loss of life and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Bhattacharya said political parties should avoid accusations while the investigation remains under way. He called for support for bereaved families, a transparent inquiry and accountability under the law if any lapses are established. Authorities are continuing to examine the crowd-management arrangements and the events leading to the sudden surge at the pandal.
