A crowd-crush incident at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata has killed 17 people, including a five-year-old child, and left 15 others undergoing treatment at Kolkata Medical College, according to information cited by Sangbad Pratidin from West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday night.
The incident took place shortly after 7.30 pm during heavy visitor movement at the pandal. A section of the entrance gate reportedly broke under crowd pressure, creating a stampede-like situation among visitors. Kolkata Police and disaster-management personnel reached the site after receiving the alert and began rescue operations, sending injured people to hospital.
The chief minister visited Kolkata Medical College on Saturday night and spoke to injured visitors and doctors. The report quoted him as describing the incident as extremely painful and saying that a fact-finding exercise would be conducted before responsibility was determined. He said the affected premises had been handed over to forensic and fire-brigade teams for investigation.
According to the report, the chief minister said police officials at the site had reported that a public announcement by the puja committee was followed by sudden pushing and running among visitors. Families of two victims reportedly told him that private security personnel were present and that a whistle may have triggered the rush. The account remains part of the ongoing investigation into how the crowd movement began and why the entrance structure failed.
The chief minister said 17 people had died and 15 were injured. He also said people connected with the puja committee, private security personnel and those on duty had been detained at a police station for preliminary questioning. The authorities have not, according to the supplied report, announced a final finding on the cause of the deaths or assigned legal responsibility.
The incident occurred during Durga Puja celebrations after heavy rain affected Kolkata and adjoining areas on Saturday. Despite the weather, visitors continued moving between pandals across the city. The combination of rain, umbrellas, concentrated pedestrian movement and crowd surges formed the immediate operating conditions around the Chorbagan pandal, although the investigation will determine the specific sequence of events.
The Chorbagan puja has been stopped following the incident. Several other prominent Kolkata pandals, including Chetla Agrani, Alipore Sarbojanin, Allen Park, Tridhara Sammilani and Tala Prattoy, also temporarily barred entry, according to the report. The closures were described as safety measures while authorities responded to the accident and reviewed crowd conditions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in Kolkata, expressed condolences on social media and cancelled all his scheduled programmes in West Bengal for Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief and announced ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the family of each person who died. He said the local administration was providing assistance to those affected.
The immediate administrative focus is on treating the injured, identifying the deceased, securing the pandal site and establishing the sequence that led to the crowd surge. The forensic and fire-brigade examination, along with the police inquiry, is expected to determine whether failures in access control, announcements, private security arrangements or temporary structures contributed to the incident.
