A special voter-list registration drive will be held across Kolkata North to enrol eligible residents whose names are missing from the electoral roll, including first-time voters, people living in night shelters, workers’ colonies and other marginalised groups.
The initiative was announced on Monday through a press release issued by the District Election Officer, Kolkata North, under the West Bengal government, and the office of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner. The campaign is being conducted in accordance with a directive issued by the Election Commission of India on October 1, 2026.
The election authorities said any person meeting the prescribed eligibility requirements can apply for inclusion in the voter list at any time. The stated objective is to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral roll.
Special camps will be organised in different areas of Kolkata North. Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers will conduct the camps with support from Booth Level Officers and other election officials, according to the announcement.
The campaign will give particular attention to eligible residents living in night shelters, workers’ colonies and communities described by the election authorities as socially marginalised. These groups can face practical difficulties in accessing information and completing civic registration processes, making local outreach a central part of the initiative.
The authorities also plan to run awareness programmes to inform residents about voter registration. Outreach will involve educational institutions, local-level publicity, Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation activities, and regular engagement with the news media.
The announcement places the municipal commissioner’s office alongside the district election administration in the public-information effort. While the election authorities will remain responsible for the registration process, local administrative networks and community-level communication are expected to help identify eligible residents and direct them towards the application process.
The drive is focused on inclusion in the electoral roll rather than on a particular election schedule. The election office said its principal aim is to provide every eligible citizen with an opportunity to be included as a voter. Details of the locations and schedules for the special camps were not included in the supplied announcement.
