Kolkata North Opens Special Camps to Expand Voter Enrolment

Kolkata North will organise special camps to help eligible residents, including first-time voters and people missing from the electoral roll, register their names ahead of the next revision exercise. The initiative has been announced by the District Election Officer’s office and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner’s office in line with a direction issued by the Election Commission of India on October 1, 2026.

The campaign is intended to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out of the voter list. According to the press release reported by Bartaman Patrika, any person who meets the prescribed eligibility conditions can apply for inclusion in the electoral roll at any time.

The special camps will be held in different areas of Kolkata North. Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers will oversee the process with support from Booth Level Officers and other election officials. The arrangement is expected to provide residents with local assistance for submitting applications and understanding the enrolment process.

The election authorities have identified residents of night shelters, worker colonies and other marginalised communities as priority groups for outreach. These groups can face practical difficulties in accessing government services, establishing residence-related documentation or receiving information about enrolment procedures. The campaign will therefore combine registration support with targeted public awareness activities.

Officials will use educational institutions, local-level publicity, voter-awareness programmes under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation initiative, and regular engagement with the media to inform eligible residents about the opportunity to apply. The outreach is also aimed at young people preparing to vote for the first time.

The announcement does not specify the individual camp locations or dates. Those details will determine how easily residents can access the service, particularly people living in shelters, informal worker settlements and areas with limited awareness of electoral procedures. The stated objective of the Kolkata North election administration is to provide every eligible citizen an opportunity to be included in the voter list.
