Kolkata Metro will run overnight services on its Blue and Green lines during four high-demand Durga Puja days, while special schedules will operate on the Purple and Yellow lines and the Orange Line will remain shut for most of the festival period, according to a schedule announced by metro authorities.
The overnight services will operate on the Blue and Green lines during the two Saptami days, Ashtami and Nabami. The move is intended to support late-night travel during the Puja period, when large numbers of people move across Kolkata for pandal visits and other festival activities.
During peak hours, trains on the Blue Line will run at six-minute intervals, while Green Line trains will operate every eight minutes. The schedule reported by Sangbad Pratidin states that services on both lines will run from 17 October to 20 October, beginning at 1pm on the Blue Line and 1.30pm on the Green Line. Blue Line services will continue until 4am the following day, while Green Line operations will continue until 3.59am.
The Blue Line will run 284 trains on Panchami and Shashthi. Services on those two days will begin at 6am and the last train will leave at 11pm. The Green Line will operate 240 trains on the same two days. These additional services are being planned around the expected increase in passenger demand during the festival.
The schedule will change on Dashami. On that day, the Blue Line will run 140 trains between 1pm and 10.30pm, with an eight-minute interval during busy periods. The Green Line will operate 74 trains from 1.30pm to 10.30pm, with trains scheduled every 15 minutes during peak periods.
The Purple and Yellow lines will also have special services throughout the Puja period, although the report does not provide a detailed train count or operating interval for those corridors. The Orange Line will operate only on Panchami and Shashthi. Services on that line will be completely suspended during the two Saptami days, Ashtami, Nabami and Dashami.
The differing schedules mean that passengers will need to check the line-specific operating hours before beginning late-night journeys. The Blue and Green lines will provide the longest operating window during the four main high-demand days, while passengers using the Orange Line will face a complete service interruption for the remaining Puja days. Metro authorities’ festival timetable sets out the operating hours, train numbers and intervals for each phase of the celebrations.
