A Kolkata trader has filed a complaint at Burrabazar police station alleging that a man took samples of 22-carat gold jewellery weighing about 450 grams on the pretext of showing them to potential buyers and later became unreachable. The complaint has sought an investigation and legal action against those responsible.
According to the trader’s complaint, the incident followed an introduction through an acquaintance. The acquaintance allegedly presented the person involved as someone with whom he had maintained business relations for a long period. A worker associated with that person was then sent to collect gold jewellery samples from the trader.
The samples, weighing approximately 450 grams, were allegedly taken on the assurance that they would be shown to prospective buyers. The trader has told police that contact with the person who collected the jewellery stopped after some time. The mobile phone used by the person was also allegedly found switched off.
The complaint states that the trader subsequently contacted the person who had allegedly sent the worker. The trader was reportedly told that the worker had gone to his village and could not be contacted. Further attempts to obtain information were allegedly unsuccessful, according to the complaint.
The trader has alleged that the incident caused substantial financial difficulty. The samples had reportedly been obtained for business dealings with other parties, and the trader said the alleged loss had created difficulties in making payments connected with those transactions.
Burrabazar is one of Kolkata’s principal commercial districts and has long been associated with wholesale trade, including jewellery and precious metals. In such transactions, samples may be circulated among prospective buyers before a sale is finalised. The complaint highlights the financial exposure that can arise when valuable goods are handed over through informal business references, although the police investigation will determine the facts and responsibility in this case.
The trader has requested that police examine the circumstances in which the samples were collected, trace the person who allegedly took them and take appropriate legal action. The supplied report does not state whether any recovery has been made, whether an arrest has taken place or which specific legal provisions have been applied. The matter remains based on the allegations contained in the complaint.
