Kolkata Flight Turns Back After Medical Emergency Aboard

An Air India Boeing 787 operating as flight AI 186 from Vancouver to Delhi—via Kolkata—was forced to return to Kolkata shortly after takeoff when a passenger became unwell midair. The aircraft landed safely and departed again after the passenger was escorted off for medical treatment. Flight AI 186, carrying 162 passengers and crew, had made a scheduled technical halt in Kolkata before continuing onwards to Delhi.

Due to geopolitical constraints, including the closure of Pakistani airspace, technical stops in Kolkata are now part of the route optimisation strategy. Approximately 25 minutes into the resumed flight, the crew received notice of a passenger’s medical distress. Acting on standard safety protocol, the flight crew diverted back to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The aircraft touched down by 7 pm IST. On landing, airport authorities had medical personnel and an ambulance ready. The ill passenger was assessed and removed from the aircraft.

“The aircraft took off again at 8:30 pm once the passenger had disembarked and medical assistance provided,” an Air India spokesperson confirmed. The diversion reflects the airline’s firm commitment to passenger safety and robust in-flight emergency protocols. Such prompt action not only ensured timely medical response but also preserved trust in aviation safety systems. Once the passenger was safely offloaded, AI 186 resumed its scheduled service to Delhi. This quick turnaround highlights the airline’s readiness to resume flight operations with minimal delay following unexpected disruptions.

Medical emergencies aboard aircraft—though relatively rare—demand swift, coordinated action. Crew training, in-cabin medical kits, and ground coordination ensure passenger welfare takes precedence. The safe resolution in this case demonstrates both preparedness and effective procedural implementation. As international operations resume over complex air routes, such as via Kolkata, passenger wellness remains critical. This incident reinforces the importance of health vigilance and strong safety frameworks in aviation.
