A new low-pressure system may form over the Andaman Sea on Sunday, raising the possibility of heavy rain across parts of West Bengal during Durga Puja, including the key festival period from Panchami to Saptami, according to the weather office.
The developing system could bring renewed rain to the state, with coastal areas expected to face a higher risk. However, meteorologists have said it is too early to determine how strongly the system will affect West Bengal. Its eventual direction and intensity will become clearer only after the low-pressure area forms.
The forecast comes as Kolkata and other parts of southern Bengal have experienced alternating spells of sunshine and rain in recent days. The unsettled weather has raised concerns over festival travel, outdoor gatherings and visits to Durga Puja pandals, which attract large crowds across the city.
The weather office has forecast dry conditions in southern Bengal on Saturday, which falls on Mahalaya, with no significant possibility of rain or thunderstorms. The more serious risk is expected to emerge later if the system develops and moves in a direction that brings rain towards the state.
Rain during the festival period can disrupt road travel and pedestrian movement in Kolkata, particularly around crowded pandal zones. The city also remains vulnerable to waterlogging during intense showers. Last year, several puja pandals and parts of the metropolis were reportedly affected by flooding after heavy rain.
The weather office has not yet confirmed the final track or strength of the possible system. A clearer assessment is expected after its formation on Sunday, when forecasters can determine the extent of its likely impact on West Bengal during the festival.
