Kochi Metro Presents Water Metro Feasibility Study to Maharashtra Government

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has submitted a comprehensive feasibility study to the Maharashtra government for the proposed Water Metro project in Mumbai. This initiative, inspired by the successful Kochi Water Metro, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide an eco-friendly commuting alternative in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The feasibility report outlines a 250-kilometre waterway network connecting key locations such as Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja. The proposed system envisions 29 terminals operating across 10 routes, offering a new dimension to urban transport in one of India’s most congested metropolitan areas. Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitish Rane has praised the timely and comprehensive nature of the proposal and directed relevant departments to initiate the next phase, which involves the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR). This marks a milestone for KMRL, which secured the consultancy assignment through a competitive bidding process, establishing its credentials as a national-level player in sustainable urban transport solutions.

The consultancy division of KMRL has emerged as a strategic unit leveraging the organisation’s expertise in infrastructure development. The division not only enhances KMRL’s revenue streams. Currently, KMRL is conducting feasibility studies for water metro Territories, as directed by the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. If further entrusted with DPR preparation could position itself as a leading force in global sustainable water transport, similar to how Delhi Metro Rail Corporation became a benchmark for metro rail systems in the country.
