Katra Banihal Section Hosts Indias Longest Railway Tunnel

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a significant advancement in India’s rail infrastructure. Spanning 272 kilometers, the project features 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, including the T-50 tunnel, India’s longest railway tunnel at 12.775 kilometers .

A standout feature of the USBRL project is the Chenab Railway Bridge, now the world’s highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower . Additionally, the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, has been constructed to withstand seismic activities and high wind speeds . The inauguration also saw the launch of two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains operating between Katra and Srinagar. These trains are expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to under three hours, enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism in the region .

The USBRL project is poised to transform the transportation landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. By providing all-weather rail connectivity, it is expected to boost economic activities, facilitate easier movement of goods and people, and integrate the region more closely with the rest of the country. The completion of the USBRL project signifies a monumental achievement in Indian rail infrastructure. With its engineering feats and enhanced connectivity, it sets a new benchmark for future railway projects in challenging terrains.
