Heavy rain across Karnataka has breached a canal embankment near Neelakoppalu village in Mandya district, inundating agricultural land and affecting several low-lying areas, while intense showers were reported in parts of the southern interior and coastal districts.
According to a report by Prajavani, the breach occurred at the pickup canal in Srirangapatna taluk, where about 15 feet of the canal embankment gave way. Water entered farmland, and bunds around some fields were washed away. The Lokapavani river was also flowing at a high level following the rain.
Agricultural land in Chandagirikoppalu, Sabbanakuppe and Ballenahalli villages was reported to have been inundated. Low-lying areas around T.M. Hosuru, Gowdahalli, Gananguru, Nelamane and Arakere also saw water accumulation, highlighting the effects of intense rainfall on drainage and irrigation infrastructure in rural settlements.
Rainfall was reported in Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, Mysuru, Kolar, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. In Kolar district, 68 millimetres of rain was recorded in the district headquarters area. Roads in several parts of the district were reported to have water flowing over them.
Rainwater entered the Nandamballi anganwadi centre in Kolar taluk, affecting children at the facility. The report said children had to eat food prepared at the centre while standing in rainwater. Heavy rain was also reported in Srinivaspur, Mulbagal, Malur, KGF and Bangarpet, as well as in Bagepalli in Chikkaballapur district.
Hassan district recorded its highest reported rainfall in Ramanathapura hobli of Arkalgud taluk, where 4.5 centimetres was recorded. Konanur hobli received 4.1 centimetres, while Hanbal hobli in Sakleshpur taluk recorded 4 centimetres.
Several areas of Chikkamagaluru, including Mullayanagiri, Narasimharajapura, Koppa, Balehonnur, Mudigere, Kottigehara and Kalasa, also received substantial rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. In Udupi, rain with thunder was reported from Thursday midnight into Friday morning, followed by overcast conditions through the day. Parts of Dakshina Kannada received two to three hours of heavy rain overnight and further intense showers on Friday afternoon.
Kodagu recorded heavy rain across most areas from Thursday night until early Friday. Shanthalli in Somwarpet taluk recorded 6.5 centimetres, while Srimangala recorded 6 centimetres, Ponnampet 5.5 centimetres, Balele 5 centimetres and Ammathi 4.5 centimetres. The Harangi reservoir received an inflow of 1,207 cusecs, according to the report.
The reported damage and inundation span irrigation infrastructure, farmland, roads and a childcare facility. The immediate effects vary by location, but the incidents have disrupted access and exposed how intense rainfall can quickly overwhelm canal embankments and local drainage systems. The report did not provide details of evacuation measures, compensation or repairs to the breached canal.
