Kanpur Becomes Defence Manufacturing Hub

Kanpur is emerging as a pivotal hub in India’s defence manufacturing sector, with significant investments and infrastructure developments enhancing self-reliance in defence production.

As part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), Kanpur is positioned to play a central role in advancing India’s goal of self-reliance in defence production. The corridor includes six nodes—Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Lucknow, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot—being developed to house key defence projects. Among recent milestones is the operationalisation of a missile manufacturing facility focused on the BrahMos system. This facility is expected to produce 70–100 units per year, including next-generation versions designed to meet future defence requirements. The integration and testing centre for these missiles is expected to serve as a core hub for assembly and rollout. It is also drawing significant supplier interest, with Tier 1, 2, and 3 vendors planning to establish operations nearby. The supply chain is expected to expand across industrial zones in Noida, Greater Noida, and Kanpur.

In parallel, arms manufacturing is gaining momentum with rifle production underway in Amethi. The corridor has so far attracted 180 MoUs, with a proposed investment of ₹34,000 crore, out of which ₹4,000 crore has already been deployed. Investments span across unmanned systems, ammunition, aerospace components, critical materials, and more. To support this growth, several infrastructure and industrial projects are underway. Material plants for titanium and super alloys are being developed, along with other critical facilities. These developments are set to generate nearly 25,000 jobs in the next five years across direct and indirect roles.

Connectivity enhancements, such as expressways linking Kanpur and Lucknow, are expected to reduce travel time and improve logistics, boosting industrial efficiency across the corridor. These steps mark a strong shift toward building a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem, positioning Kanpur as a vital part of India’s long-term defence production strategy.
