Kadapa Municipal Elections Hit as YSRCP Fails to File in Four ULBs

Kadapa municipal elections nomination process at a local government office in Andhra Pradesh

The Kadapa municipal elections have been disrupted after YSR Congress (YSRCP) candidates failed to file nominations for chairperson posts in four urban local bodies, while police registered cases against around 70 people following clashes during the nomination process.

The affected urban local bodies are Kamalapuram Nagar Panchayat and the municipalities of Mydukur, Rayachoti and Yerraguntla. YSRCP candidates alleged that Telugu Desam (TD) workers obstructed them during the final two days of the nomination process on October 17 and 18.

In Kamalapuram, YSRCP nominee Marujolla Kavitha reportedly attempted to submit her nomination until 3 pm on Sunday but returned without filing her papers, according to the report. The party also failed to field ward candidates in the four urban local bodies.

The absence of competing nominees means TD candidates in Kamalapuram, Rayachoti, Yerraguntla and Mydukur are expected to be elected unopposed, according to the latest information available. The outcome will depend on the completion of the election authorities’ formal process.

The disruption extended beyond the four chairperson contests. In Kadapa Municipal Corporation, YSRCP nominees filed papers in only 16 of the 66 divisions. Similar allegations of obstruction were reported from parts of Proddatur and Jammalamadugu.

The police registered cases against around 70 people following clashes during the nomination process. A case was also registered against Shaik Shareef Jinna, the YSRCP chairperson nominee in Rayachoti. The report does not specify the sections invoked or provide details of arrests.

The developments in Kadapa contrasted with the nomination process in neighbouring Kurnool and Nandyal districts. Nominations proceeded without major incidents in Kurnool, Yemmiganur, Adoni, Nandyal, Allagadda, Nandikotkur, Dhone, Atmakur and Bethamcherla.

The events place the focus on the functioning of local electoral processes, where the nomination stage determines whether residents receive a contested choice for municipal leadership. The reported failure of candidates to submit papers has affected both chairperson contests and ward-level representation in the concerned urban local bodies.

The available report attributes the obstruction allegations to YSRCP and records the police cases following the clashes. It does not include a response from TD representatives or details of any election authority intervention. Further formal steps in the municipal election process will establish the final candidate lists and the status of the unopposed contests.
