Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a former Jawaharlal Nehru University professor, over allegations of sexual harassment involving students at the university.
The FIR, dated October 11, was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station on a complaint by JNU’s Chief Security Officer. Police have invoked provisions relating to sexual harassment, sexually coloured remarks, and words, gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman. The investigation is underway.
The case follows JNU’s decision last Friday to dismiss Akoijam, who taught at the School of Social Sciences, after an inquiry by the university’s Internal Committee. Officials said around 10-12 students from the Centre for Study of Social Systems had filed a sexual harassment complaint against him.
According to the FIR, the alleged incidents took place between July 2025 and May 2026 at the Centre for Studies of Social System, the School of Social Sciences and other locations. The police case names Akoijam in connection with the allegations; the allegations have not been established in court.
The FIR records that JNU’s Internal Committee examined the complainants’ accounts, witness statements, defence witnesses and other material before reaching its assessment. A communication from the university’s Chief Security Officer to the Station House Officer at Vasant Kunj North forwarded documents submitted by the committee and requested legal action.
As cited in the police communication, the committee said it did not view the matter as an isolated incident. Its cumulative assessment referred to an alleged “recurring pattern of inappropriate personal interaction, sexually suggestive conduct, and unwelcome physical contact”. The assessment also referred to an “intimidating and hostile learning environment” and “inadequate professional boundaries in interactions with female students”.
The police action places the university’s internal disciplinary process alongside the criminal investigation. The FIR was filed after the Chief Security Officer forwarded the Internal Committee documents to the police, creating a formal law-enforcement record in addition to the university inquiry.
Akoijam is the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur. The case has also triggered political protests, with the BJP Mahila Morcha protesting against him in Delhi. Police said their investigation into the allegations is continuing.
