JNU Sexual Harassment Case: MP Appears Before Delhi Police

JNU sexual harassment case linked to a police investigation at a Delhi police station

Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam appeared before investigators at Delhi’s Vasant Kunj police station on Thursday in connection with a sexual harassment case linked to Jawaharlal Nehru University, after the Delhi Police issued him a notice to join the investigation.

Senior police officers told The Indian Express that Akoijam was questioned for about two hours. He arrived in Delhi from Manipur through Indira Gandhi International Airport before appearing at the police station. Speaking to reporters, Akoijam said, “I came to co-operate…” He also described the case as political.

Akoijam, a former professor at JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences, was dismissed by the university on October 9 following an internal inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment. Earlier this week, he accused JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit of lying about the internal inquiry.

According to officials cited in the report, around 10 to 12 students from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems had filed a sexual harassment complaint against him. The FIR, dated October 11, was registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station under charges relating to sexual harassment, sexually coloured remarks, and words, gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

The police case followed communication from JNU’s Chief Security Officer to the station house officer of the Vasant Kunj North police station. The communication included documents submitted by the university’s Internal Committee and sought legal action. The FIR records that the committee examined the complainants’ accounts, witness statements, defence witnesses and other material on record before assessing the allegations.

As cited in the communication, the committee said its assessment did not treat the matter as an isolated incident. It referred to what it described as a “recurring pattern of inappropriate personal interaction, sexually suggestive conduct, and unwelcome physical contact”. The assessment also referred to an “intimidating and hostile learning environment” and “inadequate professional boundaries in interactions with female students”.

The alleged incidents mentioned in the FIR are stated to have taken place between July 2025 and May 2026 at the Centre for Studies of Social System and other locations. The case therefore involves both an internal university process and a criminal investigation, with the police action based on material forwarded by the university’s Chief Security Officer.

Akoijam’s appearance marks the latest step in the police investigation after the university’s internal inquiry and his dismissal. The police are continuing their investigation into the allegations recorded in the FIR.
