Thane police have intensified security and surveillance around NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad’s residence after an unidentified caller allegedly threatened to harm him and claimed to be waiting outside his bungalow. Police said the call was traced to Wagholi near Pune, while the caller is suspected to be from Yavatmal.
The threat calls were received by Awhad three times, according to his social media account. He alleged that the caller used abusive language, demanded entry to his residence and claimed to have been stationed outside since 4.30 pm on Sunday.
Following the calls, police increased patrolling near the legislator’s home in Thane and began scanning CCTV footage from nearby locations. Awhad already has state-provided security, officials said.
Prashant Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone V, said the Vartak Nagar police had registered a non-cognisable complaint as per protocol. The police have also sought court permission to investigate the matter.
“The call has been traced to Wagholi near Pune, and the caller is suspected to be from Yavatmal. A police team is likely to have been sent to Pune. Further investigation is underway,” Kadam said.
The tracing of the call has shifted the investigation beyond Thane, with police examining the location associated with the number and working to establish the identity and whereabouts of the caller. The police statement did not confirm whether the suspected caller had physically travelled to Thane or whether anyone had been found outside Awhad’s residence.
A non-cognisable complaint is recorded for offences where police generally require permission from a court to undertake a full investigation. In this case, officials said the complaint was registered and court permission was sought as part of the investigative process.
The immediate police response has focused on protecting the MLA’s residence, reviewing nearby surveillance footage and tracing the source of the calls. Further action will depend on the investigation and the identification of the person suspected of making the threat.
