A 22-year-old man died after allegedly coming into contact with a live electric wire in Bhurkhamunda under Badmal police station limits in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Thursday evening, while efforts to take him to hospital were disrupted by a stationary goods train blocking a level crossing.
The deceased was identified by police as Sonu Sahani, a resident of Buromal village. According to the police, Sahani had gone to Bhurkhamunda with a group of friends. While relieving himself in the area, he accidentally came into contact with a live wire and suffered a severe electric shock.
His friends attempted to move him to a hospital immediately after the incident. However, their route was obstructed when a stationary goods train blocked a level crossing. The group reportedly tried to carry the injured man through the stationary train to reach medical care.
Before they could complete the transfer, the train began moving. The group was forced to remain onboard until the train stopped at Brundamal railway station. Sahani was then taken from the station to Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
“Sonu came in contact with a live electric wire and sustained a severe shock. An investigation is underway to ascertain circumstances leading to the incident,” Dilip Behera, inspector-in-charge of Badmal police station, said, according to the report.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and begun an investigation into the circumstances that led to the electrocution. The investigation is expected to establish how the live wire came to be present in the area and the precise sequence of events after Sahani was injured.
The incident has brought two separate public-safety concerns into the same emergency: exposure to an unprotected electrical hazard and the difficulty of moving a critically injured person across a blocked railway crossing. The account also highlights how access to medical care can become more complicated when road or rail infrastructure interrupts the most direct route from an incident site.
No further details about the ownership or condition of the live wire, the status of the level crossing, or the findings of the police investigation were available in the supplied report. Authorities have not announced any remedial action beyond the registration of the unnatural death case and the ongoing inquiry.
