JDA Demolition Drive Targets New Sanganer Road Encroachments

The Jaipur Development Authority will begin a limited demolition drive on a one-kilometre stretch of New Sanganer Road on Monday to remove encroachments and support widening of the corridor, while traders seek urgent court protection against the action.

The enforcement wing will operate between Gurjar Ki Thadi and Sodala, with around 15 structures identified for the immediate drive. JDA enforcement wing DIG Anand Sharma said the action would focus on staircases, shop extensions and other smaller encroachments rather than major portions of houses or commercial buildings.

“Since we need to file a compliance report Tuesday, we need to conduct this drive Monday,” Sharma said, according to the Times of India report. The action follows directions from the Rajasthan High Court to remove encroachments and widen the road corridor.

The planned demolition has already affected activity along the road. Several shopkeepers began shifting goods from their premises on Saturday evening in anticipation of the operation. By Sunday, many shops remained closed and business activity had reduced along the affected stretch.

Traders have filed two petitions seeking stays on the drive, one before the Supreme Court and another before the Rajasthan High Court. Pawan Sahu, chairperson of the New Sanganer Road Traders’ Association, said the Supreme Court had listed the matter on Monday, while the High Court had sought a reply from the JDA on Tuesday during a hearing on an appeal petition.

“We are expecting stays in either or both petitions. JDA should have waited for another two days,” Sahu said. He and three other petitioners have already obtained stays from a JDA tribunal against demolition notices issued on September 27.

The authority had served notices on around 250 structures identified as encroachments, directing their owners to remove them by October 3. Monday’s action, however, is expected to cover only the limited stretch selected by local JDA officials for immediate compliance with the court direction.

The difference between the wider list of notified structures and the smaller number included in the immediate operation reflects the staged nature of the enforcement action. The JDA has linked Monday’s drive to the deadline for submitting its compliance report, while the petitions could determine whether further action proceeds.

A JDA enforcement official said the authority had asked the Jaipur commissionerate to deploy police personnel and complete other preparations for the operation. The next immediate milestones are the demolition drive on Monday, the Supreme Court listing and the High Court proceedings scheduled for Tuesday.
