Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released after seven days in custody following written undertakings before the Special Executive Magistrate court that they would not engage in activities likely to disturb public peace, according to a report by Jagran – New Delhi. The court directed both men to appear again on October 23.
The two were released after furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000 and assuring the court that they would comply with all conditions imposed on them. They also gave a written undertaking expressing confidence in the judiciary and the Special Executive Magistrate court.
A key condition concerns demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi’s designated protest area. Das and Ranka stated that they would not call for a protest at the site as long as an order restricting demonstrations there remains in force. They further undertook that any future protest would remain within constitutional limits.
The court clarified that the order concerns release from custody and does not close the underlying case. The investigation will continue in accordance with law, the report said. The conditions require the two accused and their sureties to maintain public order and strictly follow the terms of the bond.
The case places the administration of public demonstrations at Jantar Mantar within the immediate legal proceedings. The site is one of New Delhi’s principal spaces for public protest, where demonstrations are subject to permissions, restrictions and law-and-order directions issued by the authorities. The court’s order, as reported, does not remove the existing restriction referred to in the undertakings.
Das and Ranka, along with their sureties, have been directed to appear before the court at 3 pm on October 23. Their release remains subject to compliance with the bond conditions, while the investigation and proceedings continue.
