More than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed at the IP Extension Dussehra celebrations in East Delhi on Tuesday, October 20, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the event and burn effigies, including one representing black marketers of counterfeit medicines.
The security arrangements at the Shri Ramlila Committee Indraprastha grounds have been strengthened ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. The deployment will cover the venue and surrounding areas, with security agencies also preparing for crowd control and traffic management during the programme.
The effigy burning will include those of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad, along with an effigy representing people involved in the black marketing of fake medicines. The event is being held as part of the Dussehra celebrations at the IP Extension Ramlila grounds.
The Special Protection Group, which is responsible for the Prime Minister’s security, took control of arrangements at the venue two days before the programme. Security checks were intensified at the Ramlila grounds on Monday, with visitors allowed to enter only after 7 pm. Similar checks will be conducted on Tuesday, including searches at entry gates and verification of entry passes.
Snipers will be positioned on nearby buildings, while drones will be used to monitor the venue and surrounding areas. The bomb disposal squad, dog squad and quick response teams will remain deployed to respond to any suspicious activity or emergency during the event.
The security plan will also affect the Dussehra fair’s operations. The rides at the fair will remain closed while the Prime Minister is present at the venue. Fire tenders and ambulances will be kept ready for emergencies, while police personnel will be positioned at different locations to regulate the movement of visitors and vehicles.
Traffic management is being coordinated alongside the security arrangements. Police teams will work to control the crowd and maintain vehicle movement around the venue during the programme. The deployment is intended to keep access routes organised while managing the large public gathering expected for the celebrations.
East district Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajiv Kumar said comprehensive arrangements had been made in view of the Prime Minister’s programme. He said Delhi Police had completed preparations for security and traffic management and that coordination was being maintained among all the agencies involved.
The arrangements will remain in force during the Prime Minister’s presence at the IP Extension Ramlila grounds. Entry checks, surveillance, emergency response deployment and traffic regulation are scheduled to continue through the programme.
