Indian Railways Completes Major Tunnel in Odisha Project

The Khurda Road-Balangir rail project in Odisha has reached a significant milestone with the completion of Tunnel T2, marking the end of tunnel excavation work along the corridor.

This achievement underscores the project’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic growth in the state. Tunnel T2, located between Buguda and Daspalla in Nayagarh district, spans 1,775 meters and is the second-longest tunnel in the project. The tunnel was constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), a sophisticated technique that allows for precise excavation in challenging terrains. The completion of Tunnel T2 means that all seven planned tunnels in the 75-kilometer stretch between Daspalla and Purunakatak have been successfully excavated.

The Khurda Road-Balangir rail line project, which covers a total distance of 301 kilometers, includes a total tunnel length of 12.76 kilometers. The tunnels are strategically located to navigate the rugged Eastern Ghats, minimizing environmental impact and preserving the region’s biodiversity. Incorporating features such as animal passages and viaducts, the project demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development and ecological conservation. Upon completion, the rail line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Bhubaneswar and Balangir, enhancing access to education, healthcare, and markets. This improved connectivity is anticipated to stimulate trade, attract investment, and create employment opportunities, contributing to the socio-economic development of Odisha.

The successful completion of Tunnel T2 is a testament to the engineering excellence and dedication of all those involved in the Khurda Road-Balangir rail project. As the project progresses towards its final stages, it holds the promise of transforming transportation infrastructure in Odisha, paving the way for a more connected and prosperous future.
