Industry representatives have argued that the transition has created uneven access for passengers travelling from central and northern parts of Chennai, increasing travel time and dependence on multiple modes of transport. The issue is emerging as a broader urban mobility challenge for a rapidly expanding metropolitan region where transport infrastructure continues to shift towards peripheral growth corridors.<\/span>Transport analysts note that while Kilambakkam was designed to decongest the city core and improve long-distance bus movement, the transition has exposed gaps in last-mile connectivity, multimodal integration and commuter accessibility. Urban planners say large-scale transport hubs on city fringes can reduce congestion and emissions only when supported by reliable suburban rail, Metro and feeder bus systems.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The demand for restoring at least part of the omni bus network to Koyambedu reflects the continuing importance of centrally connected transit infrastructure in dense urban economies. Alongside route concerns, the omni bus industry has also sought a complete overhaul of transport administration through digitisation. Operators claim several regulatory services still require physical visits to Regional Transport Offices, creating delays and inefficiencies. Mobility sector specialists say digitising permits, ownership transfers and compliance approvals could improve transparency, reduce administrative burden and limit discretionary enforcement practices.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The industry has additionally proposed technology-led road monitoring systems that use automated toll and tracking infrastructure instead of frequent roadside inspections. Such systems, already adopted in parts of India, are increasingly viewed as tools for improving compliance while reducing traffic bottlenecks and fuel wastage caused by vehicle stoppages. Another major issue raised is the structure of road taxation on private buses operating in Tamil Nadu. Operators contend that higher taxation compared to neighbouring states has increased operational costs at a time when fuel prices, maintenance expenses and financing costs remain elevated. Economists tracking the transport sector say taxation policy can significantly influence ticket pricing, fleet modernisation and investment in cleaner vehicle technologies.<\/span><\/h4>\n

Concerns have also been raised over the pricing and procurement framework for Vehicle Location Tracking Devices, which are mandatory for passenger safety and fleet monitoring. Industry observers warn that limited vendor access can inflate compliance costs, particularly for small and medium fleet operators already facing thin margins.
