The initial phase of services on the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar route is likely to begin by the end of June, subject to final safety approvals from railway authorities. The corridor is being viewed as a major milestone in Pune’s evolving public transport network, particularly for commuters travelling through some of the city’s most congested growth zones. The first operational section is expected to include 12 stations from Hinjewadi towards Balewadi, while construction and finishing activities continue on remaining stations closer to Shivajinagar.

Metro officials stated that trial operations across the full alignment have already been completed successfully and the project has crossed 95 per cent physical progress. However, station access infrastructure, passenger circulation systems and final regulatory clearances are still under execution at selected locations. The Pune Metro Line 3 corridor spans approximately 23 kilometres and links major employment centres, residential clusters and commercial districts across western Pune. The route passes through rapidly urbanising neighbourhoods such as Wakad, Baner and Balewadi before connecting with the city centre transport network at Shivajinagar and Civil Court. Urban mobility experts believe the phased launch of the corridor could significantly alter commuting behaviour in Pune’s western belt, where increasing vehicle ownership and office-related travel have intensified traffic congestion over the past decade. The Hinjewadi technology zone alone attracts thousands of daily commuters from across the metropolitan region, often resulting in long travel durations and rising transport emissions.

The Pune Metro Line 3 project also represents a significant experiment in infrastructure financing and delivery. Developed under a public-private partnership framework, the corridor is among the first metro rail projects in India to adopt a large-scale PPP model for urban transit development. Transport planners argue that the success of the project will depend not only on operational efficiency but also on how effectively the metro integrates with feeder systems, pedestrian access, bus services and last-mile connectivity. Without seamless interchange networks, experts warn that metro systems risk underutilisation despite substantial infrastructure investment. The corridor is expected to create wider economic effects across Pune’s western urban region. Improved transit accessibility typically drives demand for mixed-use development, rental housing and commercial office activity around metro stations. Real estate consultants note that several areas along the alignment have already witnessed accelerated residential growth due to expectations of improved public transport connectivity.

Environmental analysts also see the metro expansion as an important step towards reducing dependence on private vehicles in a city increasingly challenged by air pollution, fuel consumption and road congestion. However, they caution that long-term sustainability gains will require integrated urban planning rather than isolated infrastructure expansion. With the remaining stations expected to open later this year, Pune’s expanding metro network is gradually positioning itself as a central pillar of the city’s future mobility strategy and broader climate-resilient urban development agenda.

Also Read: Mumbai Metro Barricade Removal Eases Monsoon Traffic

Pune Metro Line Three Nears Public Launch

Pune is preparing to open the first operational stretch of Metro Line 3, a long-awaited urban transit corridor expected to

[16,18,1613,137,19,420,142
193,4335,418,1883,790,1092,3738,129,292,271,130,69
post-130302","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cities","category-latest","category-metro","category-metro-ways","category-news","category-pune","category-transportation","tag-climate-resilient-cities","tag-hinjewadi-metro","tag-maharashtra-infrastructure","tag-metro-rail","tag-public-transport","tag-pune-infrastructure","tag-pune-metro","tag-smart-cities-india","tag-sustainable-transport","tag-transit-oriented-development","tag-urban-development","tag-urban-mobility
["GET
