The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated plans to convert the dividing corridor between sectors 99 and 102 into the city\u2019s first \u201cmodel road\u201d, signalling a broader shift towards people-centric urban transport infrastructure in emerging neighbourhoods.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The proposed project, estimated at nearly \u20b932 crore, comes at a time when several newly urbanised sectors along the Dwarka Expressway belt continue to struggle with deteriorating roads, weak pedestrian access and fragmented civic services despite a sharp rise in residential occupancy. Urban planners say the intervention reflects increasing pressure on local authorities to retrofit expanding real estate zones with sustainable infrastructure rather than relying solely on automobile-led growth. <\/span>According to officials familiar with the project, the redesigned corridor will integrate features such as dedicated cycling infrastructure, upgraded footpaths, landscaped green belts and rainwater harvesting systems. A 1.5-kilometre cycling track is expected to become one of the key elements of the Model Road Project, aimed at encouraging low-emission mobility within high-density residential clusters.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The redevelopment also includes modern LED street lighting, redesigned service lanes and pedestrian-friendly pathways intended to improve road safety and last-mile accessibility. Urban development specialists argue that integrating climate-resilient systems such as rainwater harvesting and permeable green edges could help reduce waterlogging risks while improving environmental performance in fast-concretising areas. <\/span>The Model Road Project is also being viewed through the lens of Gurugram\u2019s evolving mobility strategy. With vehicle ownership continuing to rise across the National Capital Region, planners increasingly see non-motorised transport infrastructure as essential to reducing congestion and improving air quality. <\/span><\/h4>\n

Dedicated cycling and walking facilities, once absent from most urban road projects, are gradually becoming part of mainstream city planning frameworks. <\/span>Officials indicated that the sector 99-102 corridor may act as a template for future upgrades across New Gurugram. Additional redevelopment plans are reportedly being prepared for nearby dividing roads and outer sector corridors, involving investments worth several hundred crores over the coming years. <\/span>While execution timelines and construction challenges remain key concerns, urban policy observers say the success of the initiative will depend less on cosmetic upgrades and more on long-term maintenance, accessibility standards and integration with public transport networks. For a city frequently criticised for uneven infrastructure growth, the project could become an important test case for whether emerging urban districts can evolve into safer and more climate-responsive neighbourhoods.<\/span><\/h4>\n
