The project, being managed through the city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), aims to create a consolidated digital network of buried utilities across Pune’s rapidly expanding urban landscape. Officials said nearly 2,000 kilometres of underground infrastructure, including water pipelines, drainage networks and utility cables, will eventually be mapped under the initiative. Surveys covering around 600 kilometres of major road corridors are already underway using geospatial technologies and advanced digital software systems.

The underground utility mapping project is expected to address one of Pune’s long-standing civic challenges — the absence of a unified database for critical infrastructure lying beneath roads and public spaces. Urban planners say the lack of coordinated utility data has frequently resulted in repeated road excavation, accidental damage to pipelines and delays in emergency repairs, particularly during monsoon months. According to civic officials, the mapping exercise will also help identify vulnerable intersections where sewage and drinking water pipelines may overlap or intersect, posing potential public health risks. Authorities believe the system could improve maintenance planning while helping departments respond faster during flooding, leakages and infrastructure failures.

The initiative comes at a time when Pune is facing increasing pressure on urban infrastructure due to rapid population growth, rising construction activity and climate-related weather disruptions. Experts note that Indian cities expanding without integrated underground infrastructure planning often struggle with flooding, traffic congestion and inefficient maintenance systems, leading to higher long-term civic costs. The ICCC is simultaneously strengthening Pune’s digital disaster management network through real-time monitoring technologies. Flood sensors are being installed near rivers and water bodies to improve early warning systems during heavy rainfall events. The administration is also carrying out mapping of rivers and stormwater channels to support flood mitigation planning in vulnerable areas. In another technology-led intervention, drones are being tested at a fire station in Katraj to support emergency response operations. Officials said the aerial systems are expected to provide live visual assessments during fire incidents, helping teams evaluate risks, identify access routes and deploy equipment more efficiently. The administration is considering expanding the use of drones to additional fire stations in the future.

Civic authorities are also developing digital software tools to identify unauthorised constructions, illegal properties and discrepancies in property tax records through geospatial analysis and integrated mapping systems. Urban governance experts believe such systems can improve transparency, strengthen revenue collection and support more accountable urban planning. While the smart infrastructure initiative signals a shift towards data-driven governance, planners caution that technology alone cannot resolve deeper structural issues unless accompanied by consistent maintenance, inter-departmental coordination and public accountability. The effectiveness of Pune’s digital mapping strategy will ultimately depend on how successfully the information is integrated into everyday civic operations and long-term urban planning decisions. As cities across India face mounting climate and infrastructure pressures, Pune’s attempt to digitally map and monitor its underground systems may become an important test case for more resilient and coordinated urban management models.

Also Read: Chennai Fort Station Upgrade Work Stalls

Pune Digital Mapping Push Targets Urban Infrastructure

Pune’s civic administration has initiated a large-scale digital mapping exercise of underground infrastructure as part of a broader push to

[16,57,18,19,420,1337
773,123,1918,1172,86,1092,3761,1303,54,4094,168,334
post-129997","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cities","category-infrastructure","category-latest","category-news","category-pune","category-sewage","tag-civic-technology","tag-climate-resilience","tag-digital-infrastructure","tag-disaster-management","tag-flood-management","tag-pune-infrastructure","tag-pune-municipal-corporation","tag-smart-cities","tag-sustainable-cities","tag-underground-utility-mapping","tag-urban-governance","tag-urban-planning
["GET
