Kochi has moved a step closer to expanding its urban transit network after a major track infrastructure contract was awarded for the second phase of the city\u2019s metro system, reinforcing efforts to improve connectivity between residential areas, technology hubs and emerging commercial districts. Kochi Metro Rail Limited has approved a contract worth over \u20b9130 crore for ballastless track infrastructure on the Phase Two metro corridor connecting JLN Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad. The work includes the design, installation, testing and commissioning of standard gauge tracks along the elevated section of the route, which is expected to play a critical role in the city\u2019s long-term mobility transition.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Kochi Metro Phase Two project spans around 11.2 kilometres and includes 11 stations linking key employment and residential clusters in eastern Kochi. The alignment is designed to improve access to major information technology campuses, educational institutions and industrial zones including SmartCity, Infopark and the Cochin Special Economic Zone. <\/span>Urban planners say the corridor could significantly reshape commuting patterns in Kochi, where rising private vehicle ownership and fragmented public transport systems have increased congestion pressure on arterial roads connecting Kakkanad and the city centre. The ballastless track system planned for the corridor is considered more durable and maintenance-efficient compared to conventional rail track structures.
