Hyundai Pune Plant Investment Brings Rs 11,000 Crore Boost

Hyundai Pune plant investment and expanded automotive manufacturing facility in Maharashtra

Hyundai Motor India will invest Rs 11,000 crore in phases to expand its Pune manufacturing facility, a move that will increase the plant’s annual capacity from 170,000 vehicles to 320,000 by 2030 and deepen the region’s role in India’s automotive manufacturing network.

The investment was announced by Tarun Garg, managing director and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor India, at the inauguration of the Pune plant. Garg said the facility would go beyond increasing vehicle output by supporting industrial development, innovation and employment generation in the region.

The Pune facility currently has an installed annual capacity of 170,000 units. Hyundai plans to scale this up in phases to 320,000 units by 2030. The plant also includes an engine shop equipped with advanced manufacturing technologies and has the capacity to produce 150,000 engines annually to support vehicle production.

The expansion will add to Hyundai’s manufacturing footprint in India as the company prepares to increase capacity across its Pune and Chennai operations. Combined annual manufacturing capacity at the two locations is expected to reach nearly 1.14 million units by 2030, according to the company.

The Pune investment follows Hyundai’s earlier announcement of a $15.5-billion commitment to India over seven years. The broader strategy covers manufacturing expansion, research and development infrastructure, local supplier development for parts localisation and investment in future technology innovation.

For Pune, the announcement places the manufacturing facility within a wider industrial ecosystem rather than treating it only as an assembly site. Hyundai said the plant would contribute to industrial development and employment generation, while its focus on supplier cultivation and parts localisation could connect the facility to a larger network of component manufacturers and industrial service providers. The company did not provide a project-wise breakdown of the Rs 11,000-crore investment or a detailed employment number in the announcement.

Hyundai’s expansion also reflects the growing importance of Indian production facilities within the company’s global operations. Euisun Chung, executive chair of Hyundai Motor Group, said the company had reached cumulative exports of four million passenger vehicles from India since 1999. He described the milestone as evidence of the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing and India’s expanding role in Hyundai Motor Group’s worldwide operations.

The capacity increase will be implemented in phases, with the company targeting the 2030 level for the Pune facility. Hyundai’s wider seven-year plan is expected to run alongside the expansion of manufacturing capacity and the development of research, supplier and technology capabilities in India.

The announcement comes as the company continues to position India as one of its most important and strategic markets globally. The next stated milestone is the phased expansion of the Pune plant to 320,000 vehicles annually by 2030, alongside the planned increase in combined capacity at Pune and Chennai to nearly 1.14 million units.
