Hyderabad Women Journalists Protest Alleged Attacks at Tank Bund

Hyderabad women journalists protest at Tank Bund over alleged attacks and harassment of reporters.

Women journalists gathered at Hyderabad’s Tank Bund on Monday evening to protest alleged assaults, sexual harassment and unlawful detention of women reporters covering demonstrations in New Delhi and other cities. The protesters demanded the release of detained journalists, withdrawal of cases against them and an independent inquiry into police conduct.

The gathering took place near the Ambedkar statue, where participants carried placards reading “Stop suppressing media freedom” and “Fear won’t silence us”. In a statement, the protesters said police personnel and men in civilian clothes had attacked journalists even after they identified themselves as members of the press.

The journalists said the incidents occurred while reporters were covering protests against the special intensive revision of electoral rolls and demonstrations seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They alleged that journalists faced intimidation and obstruction while performing their professional duties.

The statement also referred to allegations that three women journalists were sexually harassed by police personnel. The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and sought a detailed report from the Delhi Police Commissioner within two weeks.

The protesters cited the Supreme Court’s October 11 directions against unlawful detentions. They said attacks and restrictions had continued despite assurances given to the court that journalists and other professionals would not be obstructed while carrying out their work.

The women journalists described the alleged incidents as violations of press freedom and the dignity and safety of women. They also condemned alleged assaults on women who had attended the demonstrations.

Their demands included allowing journalists to cover public events without threats or detention and taking action against those responsible for the alleged attacks. The NHRC’s request for a report from the Delhi Police Commissioner is the next formal step identified in the matter, with the response sought within two weeks.
