Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has urged citizens to stop holding midnight birthday celebrations and cake-cutting events on Tank Bund, major roads, lakefronts and public parks after a fatal accident claimed the lives of a six-year-old girl and a family member.

Sajjanar said the family had reached Tank Bund at around 2 am to celebrate the child’s birthday when the accident occurred. Police personnel rushed to the site and shifted the injured to hospital, but efforts to save the victims were unsuccessful, according to the report.

The Commissioner appealed particularly to youngsters and parents to choose homes or other safe venues for birthday celebrations instead of public roads and open spaces during late-night hours. He warned that traffic moving at high speeds in the early hours can pose serious risks when children and families gather near roads.

Sajjanar inspected the accident site along with senior police officials and later held a review with various government departments. The review was aimed at identifying measures to prevent similar incidents, though the police did not disclose specific new enforcement measures in the statement reported by Telangana Today.

The warning also highlights an existing enforcement challenge at Tank Bund. Sajjanar said birthday celebrations at the location are already prohibited under existing rules, referring to earlier directions issued by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Despite regular police efforts to disperse groups gathering at the site around midnight, some people continue to return, he said.

Tank Bund’s use as an informal late-night gathering space places celebrations close to moving traffic and the lakefront, making crowd management and road safety a shared concern for police, civic authorities and visitors. The Commissioner’s appeal seeks to discourage the practice before further incidents occur, while also placing responsibility on families and groups to avoid using public roads and lake areas for celebrations.

Sajjanar urged citizens not to risk lives for brief moments of enjoyment and asked them to avoid midnight gatherings at Tank Bund, lakes and other public places. The police and government departments are expected to continue reviewing measures to prevent similar accidents.
