Hyderabad onion prices have remained elevated for nearly two months, putting pressure on household budgets, retail vendors and eateries as fluctuating supplies from Maharashtra continue to affect arrivals in the city’s wholesale and retail markets.
Market participants at Mahboobgunj market said there has been no sustained decline in onion prices. Shyamlal, a commission agent at the market, said rates had remained high for almost two months and that any correction would depend largely on arrivals from producing regions and the prices at which consignments reach the wholesale market.
Hyderabad relies mainly on supplies from Maharashtra for onions, making the city’s market sensitive to changes in arrivals from the state. Fluctuations in supply have affected both wholesale and retail rates, with traders and consumers waiting for more consistent inflows before expecting prices to ease.
The impact is visible in household purchasing patterns. Retail vendors said customers were buying smaller quantities or restricting purchases to what they considered essential. Syed Ali, a vegetable vendor, said customers were increasingly questioning onion prices before deciding how much to buy.
The pressure has also reached small vendors and food businesses. With consumers becoming more cautious about spending, retail sellers said maintaining sales had become more difficult. Hotels and eateries, meanwhile, have been reducing the quantity of onion used in cooking and salads to control operating costs.
Some establishments are also using less onion in food parcels. The measure is intended to limit the effect of higher input costs without immediately increasing menu prices, according to the report. For businesses operating on tight margins, even a staple ingredient can affect preparation practices and daily expenses when elevated prices persist.
Onions are a regular part of household cooking and are widely used by eateries in meals, gravies, salads and food parcels. The prolonged rise has therefore affected both domestic consumption and the cost structure of small food businesses, although the supplied report does not specify the extent of the increase or provide a citywide average retail price.
Market participants said a sustained improvement in arrivals from Maharashtra and other supplying regions would be necessary for prices to ease. Until supply becomes more consistent, households, vegetable vendors and eateries in Hyderabad are expected to continue adjusting purchases and usage in response to market rates.
