A major fire broke out at a furniture manufacturing and storage godown in Dattatreya Nagar, Tappachabutra, Hyderabad, on Tuesday, destroying a large quantity of furniture and raising fears that the flames could spread to nearby homes and apartment buildings.
The godown, owned by Syed Ali, was engulfed in flames, sending thick black smoke across the neighbourhood. Residents in the surrounding area were alarmed because the facility is located close to residential houses and apartment buildings.
At least six fire engines were sent to the site after the blaze was reported. Firefighters battled the flames and brought the fire under control. The report did not specify how long the operation lasted or whether any surrounding buildings had to be evacuated.
No casualties or injuries were reported immediately. The extent of the property damage was yet to be assessed, although a substantial quantity of furniture stored at the facility was destroyed in the fire.
A short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blaze, but the cause had not been established at the time of reporting. The distinction will be important for the police investigation and any assessment of safety compliance at the premises.
The incident highlights the operational risks faced by neighbourhoods where manufacturing, storage and residential uses exist close together. Furniture facilities can contain combustible materials, and a fire in such premises can generate intense heat and heavy smoke. In this case, the proximity of the godown to homes increased residents’ concern about the possibility of the flames spreading.
Tappachabutra police have registered a case and taken up an investigation into the incident. Further details on the cause of the fire, the total damage and any action relating to the premises are expected as the investigation progresses.
