The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 7.750 kg of high-grade cannabis valued at an estimated Rs 2.71 crore from a passenger arriving at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport from Bangkok on Monday, according to the Hyderabad Zonal Unit of the agency. The passenger was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and further investigation is under way.
The seizure followed what the DRI described as specific intelligence about an Indian passenger suspected of carrying hydroponic weed in his baggage. Acting on the information, officers of the Hyderabad Zonal Unit intercepted the passenger at the airport.
During examination of the passenger’s check-in baggage, officers found an electric geyser. When the appliance was opened, officials recovered 73 packets containing a greenish substance. The material weighed 7.750 kg in total and tested positive for ganja using a Narcotic Drugs Detection Kit, the report said.
The DRI estimated the illicit-market value of the recovered cannabis at Rs 2.71 crore. The agency seized the substance and arrested the passenger under the provisions of the NDPS Act-1985. The report did not identify the passenger or provide details of the specific flight involved.
The case highlights the role of intelligence-led checks alongside routine baggage examination at one of Telangana’s principal international aviation gateways. The recovery was made from checked-in baggage after the passenger arrived from Bangkok, with the suspected contraband concealed inside an electrical appliance.
The DRI’s Hyderabad Zonal Unit is handling the investigation. The agency has not released further details in the supplied report about the intended destination of the cannabis, possible links to other individuals or the next stage of the legal proceedings. Further action will depend on the ongoing investigation and proceedings under the NDPS Act.
