Hunsur’s Manjunatha Layout was partially submerged after 231.2 mm of rain fell across the taluk on Thursday night, leaving residents in a difficult situation and renewing concerns over a flooding problem that has persisted for years.
The flooding affected parts of the layout in Hunsur city, where residents have reportedly faced repeated inundation during both the southwest and northeast monsoon seasons. According to a report by Prajavani, residents have brought the issue to the attention of elected representatives several times, but a complete solution has not yet been implemented.
The rainfall was recorded across several measurement centres in the taluk. Harangi recorded 73.6 mm, the Central Food and Agricultural Research Institute (CFTRI) centre recorded 82.0 mm, Chilakunda recorded 38 mm and Bilikere recorded 37.6 mm, according to Chandru, an official of the taluk weather department.
Following the flooding, Hunsur City Municipal Council Commissioner Manasa and a team inspected the affected area. The civic body undertook temporary measures and began efforts to remove the accumulated water from the layout, the report said.
The immediate response has come alongside an ongoing infrastructure project under the Nagarothana scheme. Drainage and cement-road works are being carried out in the layout, with most of the work reportedly completed. The municipal administration said the remaining work would be completed within the next three months.
The repeated flooding has placed the timing and effectiveness of the drainage project under direct scrutiny. While the municipal body has said the works will allow residents to live without concern, the latest inundation shows that the area remains vulnerable until the construction is completed and the drainage system can handle heavy rainfall.
For residents, the problem is not limited to a single extreme-weather event. The report describes seasonal flooding over several years, indicating a continuing gap between the layout’s existing drainage capacity and the volume of stormwater generated during intense rain. The absence of a completed long-term solution has left households facing recurring disruption and uncertainty during the monsoon.
The municipal inspection and temporary water-removal measures are the immediate next steps. The civic body’s stated milestone is completion of the remaining drainage and cement-road works within three months, after which the layout’s response to heavy rainfall will be closely relevant to residents who have experienced repeated inundation.
