Himashri Boro Death: Assam Sends IGP to Probe Suspected Foul Play

Railway tracks in Andhra Pradesh linked to the Himashri Boro death investigation

The Assam government has sent a police team led by an inspector general of police to Andhra Pradesh to assist in the investigation into the death of 20-year-old Himashri Boro, whose body was found near railway tracks after she went missing during a train journey from Visakhapatnam to Guwahati.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that the state government was coordinating with the Union railway ministry and the Andhra Pradesh government to ensure a fair and thorough inquiry. He met Boro’s family at Chapaidang in Guwahati and said local people and relatives had expressed suspicions about the circumstances of her death.

“We have sent an IGP of Assam Police to investigate the entire matter,” Sarma said after meeting the family. He added that he had written to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Andhra Pradesh chief minister, seeking an investigation into the events surrounding Boro’s disappearance and death.

In his letter, Sarma requested a “thorough, impartial and time-bound inquiry” covering Boro’s boarding of the train, her disappearance and the recovery of her body. The letter said the circumstances had raised “serious suspicion of foul play” and called for any culprits to be identified and brought to justice at the earliest.

Boro had travelled to Visakhapatnam as part of a dance troupe. She boarded the Dibrugarh Vivek Express at Visakhapatnam on October 5 while returning to Guwahati. According to the report, her family received a message from her the following day in which she expressed fear about the presence of several men around her.

She subsequently went missing. Her bag was later found in the train’s S2 coach, while her body was recovered on October 7 from a forested area near Malayapuram in Srikakulam district, close to the railway tracks between Dusi and Ponduru railway stations in Andhra Pradesh.

The case involves authorities across multiple jurisdictions. The train journey began in Andhra Pradesh, the body was recovered there, and the deceased’s family and state police are based in Assam. The Assam Police team’s role is to assist with the inquiry, while the state government is seeking coordination with railway and Andhra Pradesh authorities.

Sarma said he would continue following up on the investigation. The inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances in which Boro left or disappeared from the train, the significance of the message sent to her family, and how her body came to be found near the tracks. No conclusion about the cause of death or possible criminal responsibility has been established in the material available for this report.
