Himadri Speciality Chemicals Ltd plans to invest ₹1,613 crore across lithium iron phosphate, speciality chemicals, carbon nanotubes and super speciality carbon black as it expands its manufacturing capacity for energy-transition and industrial applications.
The proposed investment includes ₹1,125 crore for lithium iron phosphate (LFP), ₹248 crore for speciality chemicals, ₹70 crore for carbon nanotubes and ₹170 crore for super speciality carbon black, according to the company’s investor presentation for the July-September quarter. The projects will combine greenfield and brownfield expansion.
The company expects the proposed capacity additions to be completed by the fourth quarter of the next financial year. Himadri said the investments would support its three business verticals: commodities, speciality chemicals and new energy materials.
“We are building the materials backbone for the energy transition economy – driving sustainable growth for decades to come. The future will belong to the companies that can continuously reload themselves – execute, reinvest, and scale again,” Himadri Speciality Chemicals Chairman and CEO Anurag Choudhary said.
The LFP and carbon nanotube investments are intended to strengthen Himadri’s presence in new energy materials. LFP is used in battery applications, while carbon nanotubes are advanced conductive materials. The company said the speciality chemicals and carbon black expansions would support existing businesses and increase its higher-value product offerings.
Himadri is also seeking to diversify its product portfolio towards applications with higher value addition. Its speciality chemical products serve industrial, construction, pharmaceutical and other end-use markets. The company has a nearly 67-per cent share of the domestic naphthalene market, according to the investor presentation.
Naphthalene is used in dyes, resins and as an intermediate in agrochemicals. Himadri also sells consumer-facing naphthalene balls under the Durofresh brand. The company has launched anthraquinone, a speciality chemical used in dyes, pigments and pulping catalysts, with applications in pharmaceuticals and agrochemical intermediates. It said the product could support import substitution and exports.
Its sodium naphthalene formaldehyde and polycarboxylate ether businesses serve traditional industrial demand as well as the construction chemicals market. These products are used in applications connected to concrete and construction processes. The company has also established what it describes as India’s first commercial carbazole plant. Carbazole is used in pharmaceuticals, electronics and dye manufacturing.
Alongside the capacity programme, Himadri said it intends to build a global presence in battery materials, strengthen its position in high-performance speciality carbon black and expand across key end-use segments. It is also targeting a position among the top three global coal tar pitch suppliers outside China.
“Himadri is shifting gear towards high-value growth, with our diversification aimed at driving business resilience resulting in significant sustainable growth in profitability over the next two years,” Choudhary said. The company’s next stated milestone is the completion of the planned projects by the fourth quarter of the next financial year.
