A 30-year-old woman was found dead inside her rented flat in Hengrabari, Guwahati, on Tuesday, with police detaining a colleague for questioning after finding a suicide note that mentioned his name. Police said the cause of death would be established after a post-mortem examination, while the woman’s family has raised suspicions of foul play.
The deceased was identified as Dolly Kashyap, a resident of Sualkuchi who worked for an insurance company. An officer from Dispur police station said no visible injury marks were found on her body when it was recovered from the flat.
The incident came to light after the apartment owner visited the flat after receiving no response. The owner noticed a foul smell coming from inside and alerted the police. A team from Dispur police station then reached the apartment and began an investigation.
According to the police, a suicide note was found inside the flat. The note mentioned Biswanath Das, who is from Purulia district in West Bengal and worked with Kashyap at the company’s Guwahati branch. Police detained Das and are questioning him along with other people in connection with the case.
“The deceased had mentioned his name in her note; we have detained him and are currently interrogating him,” the police officer said. The officer added that Kashyap’s body had been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination and that the police were waiting for the results.
The post-mortem report is expected to help investigators establish the circumstances and cause of death. Police have not announced any conclusion about whether the death was suicide or whether another person was involved.
A relative told the media that Kashyap had spoken to her family by phone on Saturday and was expected to return home on Sunday to celebrate puja with them. The family was unable to contact her despite several attempts, the relative said.
The family has called for a thorough investigation and alleged that the circumstances warranted suspicion. Police have so far described the inquiry as ongoing and have not disclosed whether a case has been registered under specific criminal sections. The investigation and post-mortem findings will determine the next steps in the case.
