Gurugram Sewer System Gets ₹10 Crore Fix for 9 Sectors

Gurugram sewer system repair work planned beneath roads in the city

Gurugram’s sewer system is set for a major repair in nine sectors after the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority prepared an estimated ₹10 crore plan to complete missing lines and address overflowing sewage. The tender has been prepared and will be issued after approval from the authority’s chief executive officer, according to a report by Live Hindustan – NCR.

The intervention covers the stretch from Sector 81 to Sector 87, where parts of the sewer network have remained incomplete for about 15 years. The Haryana Urban Development Authority had laid sewer lines in the area, but work could not be completed at 16 locations because of land acquisition disputes. Together, the missing sections account for approximately 1.5 kilometres of sewer line.

Following a meeting held last year under the chairmanship of D S Dhesi, Principal Adviser, Urban Development, it was decided that GMDA would complete the remaining work. Since the land acquisition dispute has not been resolved, the authority has decided to lay the pending sewer line beneath the road for the time being, the report said.

The incomplete network has also affected nearby villages. Sewage from surrounding villages is being discharged into the unfinished sewer line, which has now become fully filled. As a result, dirty water has started emerging on roads in the area. The situation is contributing to environmental pollution and damaging road surfaces, according to the report.

Hemant Yadav, chief engineer, GMDA, said the authority would provide a permanent solution to the sewer problem between Sectors 81 and 87. He said the tender had been prepared and would be released after approval from the chief executive officer.

The authority is also preparing a separate plan to clean sewer lines running under three major roads in Gurugram. The work will cover 900-millimetre and 1,200-millimetre lines on the main roads between Sectors 49 and 50, Sectors 65 and 66, and Sectors 66 and 67. Cleaning the sewer line on the Sector 49-50 main road is expected to cost about ₹64 lakh.

The sewer works come alongside a municipal initiative focused on controlling dust from road construction, repairs and maintenance. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram organised a training workshop at a community building in Sector 10 for contractors and junior engineers under its Mission Pollution-Free Gurugram campaign.

The workshop addressed compliance with directions issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management. Experts highlighted roadside construction material, damaged road edges and inadequate restoration after utility work as sources of dust. Contractors and engineers were instructed on measures to control dust and improve road repair and maintenance practices.

The GMDA’s next formal step for the sewer project is to obtain approval from its chief executive officer before issuing the tender. The proposed work will determine how quickly the incomplete network between Sectors 81 and 87 can be connected and whether the recurring sewage overflow on surrounding roads is brought under control.
