Gujarat Local Body Polls Face Fresh Allegations of Police Bias

Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Chavda has accused the state police and administration of acting at the direction of the BJP government, alleging that the machinery was used to target opposition leaders and influence recent local body elections.

Speaking at a press conference at the GPCC headquarters on Thursday, Chavda alleged that the actions of the police and administration were undermining democratic and constitutional rights in the state. He claimed that Congress leaders and workers who raised objections to the government were being branded as traitors and implicated in fabricated cases.

“Some police officers in Gujarat are acting as if they are BJP party workers,” Chavda alleged. He said the administration was being used to suppress the Opposition and provide electoral advantages to the ruling party. The allegations were made in the context of the recent local body elections, which directly affect the functioning of municipal and other local institutions.

Chavda further alleged that police personnel were used to prevent Congress candidates from filing nomination papers and to pressure candidates into withdrawing from the contest. He said Congress candidates and supporters were detained in several areas, including Wards 4, 11, 7 and 2 during the GMC election.

The allegations, if established, would raise questions about the administration of local elections, the neutrality of law-enforcement agencies and the ability of candidates to participate freely in municipal politics. Nomination filing and candidate withdrawals are central stages in the electoral process because they determine the field of contestants before voting takes place.

Chavda also demanded an investigation into the assets of police officers suspected of corruption. He alleged that some officers had accumulated wealth worth crores of rupees that was disproportionate to their known sources of income. The report did not provide documentary evidence for the allegation or details of any formal inquiry ordered by the authorities.

The report also did not include a response from the Gujarat government, the police administration or the BJP to the Congress leader’s claims. The immediate official position on the alleged detentions, obstruction of nominations and proposed assets inquiry therefore remains unreported in the supplied material.
