An eight-year-old boy died after a cement bench collapsed at the Vanrai police quarters in Goregaon East on Wednesday night, bringing attention to the safety of basic shared infrastructure inside a residential colony.
The child, identified as Rajvir Kale, was the son of Rohini Ghuge-Kale, a constable attached to Dindoshi Police Station. The family lived on the seventh floor of building number 3 at the Vanrai police quarters, according to a report by the Times of India.
Rajvir was playing on one of the colony’s cement benches at around 9.30 pm when it suddenly broke. The benches had been installed for visitors and residents to sit and spend time in the premises. The collapse caused serious injuries to the child.
Residents took Rajvir to Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari after the incident. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, the report said.
Vanrai Police have recorded an accidental death in connection with the incident. The available information does not specify when the bench was installed, whether it had visible damage before the collapse, or which authority was responsible for inspecting and maintaining it.
The incident occurred in a residential complex intended to house police personnel and their families, where shared spaces such as benches form part of the everyday environment used by children, residents and visitors. The death therefore involves not only a personal tragedy but also the condition of a fixed amenity in a managed housing colony.
No further details about a structural inspection, a maintenance review of similar benches, or action concerning other common-area facilities were included in the report. The police have so far classified the death as accidental, and the next official steps will determine whether the condition of the bench and the wider premises are examined as part of the inquiry.
