Goa Bondla zoo back open after three-month closure

Goa’s only zoological park at Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary reopened to the public this week after a nearly three-month closure due to an avian influenza scare. The reopening comes following confirmation from health authorities that two consecutive test results for H5N1 were negative. Officials have assured that all safety measures are in place, allowing visitors to return safely to the popular summer destination.

The zoo was shut on April 1 after the sudden deaths of five animals in early March raised alarms. Subsequent testing confirmed that two jungle cats had contracted H5N1 avian influenza, while the cause of death in the civet cats remains undetermined. As a precautionary measure, the zoo was closed to prevent further spread and to ensure the well-being of other animals, staff, and visitors during the biosecurity review period.

With clearance from national animal health authorities and the central zoo authority, the forest department issued an order to reopen Bondla Zoo immediately. Officials confirmed that comprehensive biosecurity protocols had been followed since the outbreak. Wildlife authorities emphasised the importance of swift containment efforts and monitoring during the lockdown period, noting that no additional animal deaths were reported since April.

The zoo’s reopening is expected to draw crowds once again, especially during the peak summer months. On average, Bondla receives about 6,000 visitors monthly during this season, with the highest recorded footfall in May last year. The temporary closure this year, however, has led to a notable revenue loss, given the zoo’s steady visitor base and entry fee system of ₹100 per person.

Officials said that during the closure, veterinary teams and staff at Bondla Zoo undertook enhanced monitoring, disinfection drives, and health check-ups for all resident animals. Awareness sessions were also conducted for staff on avian flu symptoms and containment strategies. The zoo’s veterinary wing has now been equipped with improved diagnostic protocols to ensure early detection of any potential outbreaks, ensuring higher preparedness for future incidents.

Now cleared to resume full operations, Bondla Zoo is regaining its position as one of Goa’s key wildlife and educational attractions. Forest officials hope the public will return in large numbers to enjoy the facility, which also plays an essential role in animal conservation. With biosecurity measures in place, the focus remains on maintaining animal welfare while restoring public trust and engagement.
