An 11-year-old girl was killed and her 18-year-old brother injured after their scooty was hit by a tractor-trolley in Ghaziabad’s Niti Khand area on Monday afternoon, with the tractor driver fleeing the scene and police examining CCTV footage to trace him.
The crash took place around 12.30 pm behind Jaipuria Mall in Indirapuram. The siblings, identified as Divya and Pratham, were reportedly travelling from their home in Ahinsa Khand 2 to a local market when the collision occurred.
ACP Indirapuram Suryabali Maurya said a passerby alerted the police helpline after the accident. A police team reached the spot and took both siblings to a nearby hospital. Divya died during treatment, while Pratham was reported to be stable.
According to the ACP’s initial account, Pratham was driving the scooty and attempted to overtake a fast-moving tractor-trolley. The tractor-trolley then struck the two-wheeler from the side, causing both riders to fall. Divya came under the tractor’s wheel and suffered fatal injuries, the officer said.
The tractor driver left the vehicle behind and fled the spot after the crash. Police have formed a team to identify and locate him. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to establish the sequence of events and gather information about the driver’s movements after the collision.
The family has refused to allow a postmortem examination, according to the report. Police said the family would submit a written complaint, after which an FIR would be registered. The reported sequence remains based on the police’s initial investigation and will be subject to the formal case investigation.
The incident has again drawn attention to the risks faced by two-wheeler users on urban roads where scooters share space with heavier vehicles. The location in Indirapuram is surrounded by residential areas, commercial activity and local-market traffic, bringing different road users into close proximity. The available police account, however, does not establish whether any additional road-safety or traffic violations were involved.
The Ghaziabad crash follows another fatal collision involving a two-wheeler and a heavy vehicle in the district. On September 14, 35-year-old teacher Amrita Gupta was killed after a truck struck her scooty near Rotary Golchakkar in Raj Nagar Extension. Gupta, who worked at Little Flower School in Delhi’s Durgapuri, died at the spot, according to the report.
Police are expected to proceed with the investigation after receiving the family’s written complaint. CCTV examination and efforts to trace the tractor driver are the immediate next steps identified by the authorities.
