Two women died and an 18-year-old girl was seriously injured after coming into contact with a live high-tension wire that had snapped and fallen in a field in Bhovapur village, Ghaziabad, on Tuesday morning, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at around 6.30 am under the limits of Nandgram police station. The three had gone to the field to collect radishes when they came into contact with the wire lying on the ground. The two women died at the spot, while the teenager suffered serious burn injuries.
The deceased were identified as Ruby and Satyawati. The injured girl was identified as Devshree and was taken to a hospital, where she is undergoing treatment, according to the report. The incident brought the risk posed by fallen live electrical infrastructure directly into an agricultural field used by local residents.
Local residents rushed to the site after learning about the incident and alerted the police. Nandgram police reached the field, spoke to residents and inspected the area as part of an investigation into how the wire snapped and fell to the ground.
ACP Nandgram Ziauddin Ahmed said the police were trying to establish when and under what circumstances the high-tension wire broke. The exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined, and the police investigation is continuing.
The incident highlights the immediate safety danger created when high-voltage distribution infrastructure fails in areas where residents work or move. The available information does not establish whether the wire had been reported earlier, how long it remained on the ground or which agency was responsible for the line. Those details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the break and the fall of the wire. Further details are expected as the investigation develops, while Devshree remains under treatment for her injuries.
