Ghaziabad Flyover Clears Key Hurdle as Hapur Chungi Work Nears

The Ghaziabad Development Authority has selected an agency to build a 1.2-kilometre, four-lane flyover at Hapur Chungi, with construction planned to begin during Navratri. The ₹125-crore project is intended to ease peak-hour congestion on one of the city’s key connections to National Highway 9 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

The GDA will issue the work order to the selected agency within a week, according to the report. Officials said construction could start during Navratri and the flyover is expected to be completed within one year of commencement.

The proposed structure will run from the Alternative Logistics Terminal (ALT) Centre in Sanjay Nagar Sector 23, through Hapur Chungi, towards the area beyond Kavinagar police station and up to the Shastri Nagar crossing. The route is used by vehicles travelling between Delhi-Meerut Road, NH-9 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

Hapur Chungi is described as a major congestion point in Ghaziabad, with the heaviest traffic reported during the morning and evening peak periods. Vehicles moving between Delhi-Meerut Road and NH-9 currently pass through the ALT Centre, Hapur Chungi and Diamond Flyover. The GDA said the high volume of traffic on this corridor prompted the authority to prepare the new plan.

The route is also important for residents of Raj Nagar Extension, who use it to access NH-9 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The proposed flyover is therefore aimed not only at traffic passing through Hapur Chungi but also at improving access between residential areas and the city’s wider road network.

The project had previously received approval from the state government, after which the GDA proceeded with the agency selection. An alternative proposal to build a flyover from the Collectorate through Hapur Chungi towards the Central Bureau of Investigation Academy had also been discussed. The authority ultimately identified the ALT Centre-to-Shastri Nagar corridor as the more urgent location for intervention.

The project will be funded through the Regional Infrastructure Fund. Its estimated cost is ₹125 crore, and the planned structure will have four lanes. The GDA said a survey conducted before preparing the project was successful, although the supplied report does not provide details of the survey methodology, traffic volumes or the selected agency.

Nand Kishore Kalal, vice-chairperson of the GDA, said the authority had prepared the plan for the Hapur Chungi flyover and selected the construction agency. He said the authority planned to begin work during Navratri and expected the completed structure to provide relief from congestion.

The next immediate milestone is the issue of the work order. Construction is expected to begin after that administrative step, with the authority targeting completion within a year of the start of work.
